A palatal obturator is a device used to limit the movement of the tongue and other oral tissues. It uses your palate to anchor the teeth. You can think of a palatal obturator as a retainer that sits on the roof of your mouth.
This type of device is used when patients have a cleft palate, a gap between their upper front teeth, when the teeth don’t meet properly, and for patients who snore.
A palatal obturator is a removable appliance that clips to your teeth. It prevents your lower teeth from touching your upper teeth, which will keep your tongue from resting against your palate and causing you to snore.
First, we’ll take an impression of your teeth. Then, we’ll send the impression to the dental lab where they’ll create your obturator. Once your obturator is ready, you’ll return to our office so we can check how it fits.
Your palatal obturator can be cleaned like the rest of your teeth, with regular brushing and dental cleanings. There may be times, however, when your palatal obturator may be in need of a repair.
If you notice problems with your palatal obturator, such as it becoming loose or falling out, be sure to contact us to schedule an appointment.

Palatal obturators are removable dental appliances that are used to prevent the collapse of the soft palate.
Patients whose soft palates are collapsing can prevent further problems and discomfort by wearing a palatal obturator. However, palatal obturators are not ideal for all patients.
For some patients, dental crowns or orthodontic appliances may be a better option.
