Best Practices For A Healthy Smile

A healthy mouth is important for having a healthy body. For maintaining good oral health, home dental care is so important, along with regular dental checkups. Here are the best practices to maintain good oral health.

Brush your teeth twice daily

The ADA recommends brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Clean for two minutes, paying close attention to the areas between the teeth and over the surface of each tooth. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.

Floss your teeth

Floss between teeth at least once per day to remove plaque at the gum line, where it’s hardest to reach with a toothbrush. Flossing helps to remove plaque from between teeth and along the gum line that your toothbrush can’t reach. Failing to floss can lead to cavities, periodontal disease, and tooth loss. The good news is that flossing doesn’t have to be difficult or painful. There are a number of tools that can help you get the job done right, including traditional string floss, interdental brushes, and water flossers.

Rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash

In addition to brushing and flossing, you should rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash after every meal in order to keep your smile healthy and clean. Mouthwashes contain ingredients that kill bacteria in your mouth, keeping your gums free of infection. Rinsing with mouthwash can also help prevent tooth decay. However, if your mouthwash contains alcohol, it can cause a dry mouth. A dry mouth can lead to bad breath and even gum disease. Visit the dentist every six months

Most patients should visit their dentist once every six months or twice for some patients. During your six-month appointments, your dentist will conduct a thorough examination of your mouth and teeth. In many cases, dentists are also able to catch problems before they become serious. For example, if a dentist notices that a patient’s gums appear to be red and swollen, they can discuss gum disease treatment options with the patient to help prevent the gums from becoming infected. Regular exams and cleanings are an important part of maintaining your oral health and preventing more serious dental issues down the road.
