Are Dental XRays Safe?

The answer is quite simple-YES! Many misleading studies have been published about all of the harmful effects of radiation. However, what most people do not know is that many of these studies were performed using the conventional, self processed film x-rays that are about the size of a stamp. Digital x-rays are the newest technology that use a computer and a sensor to take x-rays.

These new digital x-rays use about 50 to 80 percent less radiation than conventional ones. Interestingly, you actually expose yourself to more radiation by walking outside to your car than you do having x-rays at the dentist office.

This type of radiation is called “natural background radiation,” and can be found throughout your everyday environment. Many experts, including thryoid specialists, agree that dental x-ray radiation is of no concern and does not emit enough radiation to cause any harmful effects to your body. We do, however, provide our patients with lead aprons and thyroid collars which offer the maximal protection for the small amount of radiation emitted. Dental x-rays are very important in diagnosing gum and bone disease (also known as gingivitis and periodontal disease), abscesses, cavities, and tooth placement. You can rest assured that we do everything we can to assure the safety of our patients and hope this information has put you as ease about dental x-rays.
